Presentation Title: Educational Research for faculty and Resident Development

 

Biography:

John Mitchell is the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, Michigan. He is also Professor and Vice Chair of Anesthesiology at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

Dr. Mitchell is a nationally recognized educator, and educational researcher. At BIDMC, he was selected as Departmental Teacher of the Year by residents a record four times and received the S.Robert Stone Award for outstanding Medical Student Teaching from Harvard Medical School. He was a Rabkin Fellow in medical education and later Co-Directed this fellowship program for Harvard Medical School and BIDMC. He has lead multiple funded efforts exploring topics in education research and has received over a dozen awards for educational research, including the Dr. Phillip Liu Award for Educational Research in 2017 and 2021 and the Association of University Anesthesiologists inaugural EAB Education Research Award in 2022.

Nationally, he serves as President for the Society for Education in Anesthesia, Vice Chair for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) OSCE Committee and a Physician Research Consultant for the the ABA Research Committee. He is President for the Inter Hospital Study Group. He is also a member of the FAER Academy of Education Mentors in Anesthesiology and an SEA/ASA Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology.

Clinically, he provides care for cardiothoracic, liver transplant, and general surgical patients.
His research interests include technical skills training, optimizing resident performance, and increasing educational efficiency. He enjoys collaborating to explore best practices in teaching and learning and mentoring other educational researchers.

LuAnn Wilkerson, Ed.D.

Presentation Title: Mobilizing Character: Leading with Character

 

Biography:

LuAnn Wilkerson, Ed.D., is associate dean for evaluation and faculty development and professor of medical education at Dell Medical School, where her responsibilities include program evaluation, assessment of learning and enhancement of teaching capacities across the medical education continuum.

Her educational research interests include assessment of clinical performance, problem-based learning and the evaluation of outcomes of curricular innovations. She is regularly involved in facilitating faculty development workshops on enhancing teaching, learning and assessment as well as mentoring individual faculty members in building careers as medical educators. Wilkerson is also a clinical professor of educational psychology in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin.

Since completing her doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Wilkerson has become a national leader in medical education, serving elected roles in the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the American Educational Research Association. Through her publications, presentations and workshops, she has assisted thousands of medical school faculty members in the study and improvement of teaching and learning with a special focus on the challenges of clinical teaching, the implementation of student-centered educational methods and the promotion of humanistic care.

Wilkerson has received numerous medical education and teaching awards including the national Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from the AAMC and the AOA Society in 2011, the Daniel C. Tosteson Award for Leadership in Medical Education from Harvard Medical School in 2006, and the Merrill Flair Award for outstanding contributions to the field of medical education from the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Educational Affairs in 2005.

Prior to coming to Dell Medical School, Wilkerson was senior associate dean for medical education and director of the Center for Educational Development and Research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, for more than 20 years. Earlier in her career, she served as the director of faculty development at Harvard Medical School, where she contributed to the design, implementation and evaluation of the innovative New Pathway curriculum, including development of the teaching portfolio concept for the promotion of clinician-educators.
